What if God sent you a Hogwarts letter calling you to singleness?
I recently taught at a Christian university about vocational singleness and Christ’s calling in Matthew 19 for every Christian young adult to consider lifetime abstinence for the sake of the kingdom.
Jesus recognizes that both vocational singleness and Christian marriages are gifts that God gives—not that we’re supposed to demandingly take. Sometimes God offers us the gift we don’t prefer, and we’d be wise to give God time to show us why He knows what’s best for us and to learn to joyfully receive His best.
To explore that, I asked the students how they’d respond if they woke up to a Hogwarts-style letter slipped under their door, from God, that made undeniably clear that they were called to vocational singleness.
Many were honest that they’d be disappointed. Not because we don’t trust the Scriptures that God’s gifts are good, including vocational singleness...
Not because we doubt whether God intends for our churches to support vocational singles in ways that leads to thriving...
.
..but because few of us are in churches today that support vocational singleness well.
Functionally, in most churches, vocational singleness is a lesser calling, unless we do a lot of work to cobble together the support we need.
Yet, it doesn’t have to be that way. It shouldn’t be that way.
And thankfully, God didn’t intend for it to be this way. Instead, the Holy Spirit wants to empower us to offer the next generation something different.
Let’s do it!

I’m curious, how would you respond if you woke up to that Hogwarts singleness letter tomorrow? And how could you help your church become a place where a Hogwarts singleness letter would be cause for celebration?
Oh, and if you’re supporting @equipyourcommunity, thank you. Your giving makes it possible for me to teach the next generation of leaders in Christian colleges across the country. You’re helping Christians discern God’s calling and embrace his mission.
