If celibacy impact was guaranteed, what would you do?
According to the US government, singles can do 50% more kingdom work...?
I recently taught at a Christian university about vocational singleness and Christ’s calling in Matthew 19 for every Christian young adult to consider lifetime abstinence for the sake of the kingdom.
Most were honest that they would resist vocational singleness if God called them to it. They know what they’d lose: sex. But what’s to be gained?
I argued that the Scriptures and the Church have taught that vocational singles are uniquely available to focus on kingdom work that parents don’t have the time or energy to address.
Most people work four decades of 40-hour work weeks. On top of that, the average parent works the equivalent of an additional two decades of 40-hour work weeks raising kids. Imagine if vocational singles reinvested all of that +20 years of 40-hour work weeks into other focused kingdom work, without the division or distraction of kids?
I’ve got a lot of friends who no longer or never followed Jesus because of the inequality and pain they see. They wonder, if God is loves us, why is the world still so broken?
What if 10% of the next generation of Christians accepted a call to vocational singleness and spent their life addressing the brokenness in our communities in the name of Jesus. What if people noticed and found it easier to believe He might be worth following?
I asked students, if God sent them a Hogwarts singleness letter calling them to vocational singleness and *assured* them wherever they invested their extra decades of kingdom work energies, they would see meaningful healing around that particular area of brokenness, what would they do?
What about you? If you knew you could bring healing in a real way, what would you change?
If you’re supporting Equip, thank you. Your giving makes it possible for me to teach the next generation of leaders in Christian colleges across the country. You’re helping Christians discern God’s calling and embrace his mission.
